I finally managed to convince my college professor to watch Fate/Zero. He was reluctant at first, since he never really watch anime and his only exposure to it was Dragonball Z, but when I pitched it to him by saying "Legendary and Historical figures come back to life in an all out battle royale" it made him curious. After a little more nagging, he finally gave in. I told him to watch the first 3 episodes first to see what he thinks. Well apparently, he was already five episodes in when he informed me!Being a literature professor, he has some really interesting thoughts on the servants. Here are some of them.Saber - Of course, female King Arthur caught him offguard and was not expecting it. He mentioned that he was looking forward to seeing King Arthur given how much he knew of the Arthurian Legend, and was slightly disappointed that he was made female. Looking forward to the relevance of his gender change and upto what extent was Arthur's story changed to accommodate this fact (Especially regarding Guinevere)Lancer - As expected from a literature professor, he has heard of Diarmuid and he is quite well-versed in the Irish mythology. However, he was confused because he never remembered Diarmuid having a spear "that cancels magic". One interesting thing he mentioned though, was that he was surprised that they chose to go with Diarmuid, a rather obscure Irish hero, rather than CĂș Chulainn snicker snicker or Fionn Mccool which apparently is the King Arthur equivalent in Irish Lore.Caster - He has never heard the name Bluebeard before. Upon first appearance he initially deduced him to be the wizard Merlin, and apparently he still believes he is and is just using the name Bluebeard as a code name, plus that final scene on episode 5 proves it even more since he claim to know who Saber was. Probably by episode 6 he would get some clues regarding his identity since Joan of Arc will be mentioned there.Rider - His favorite servant so far according to him. But surprisingly, he hasn't figured out yet that Iskandar IS Alexander the Great. Even Persia and Macedonia apparently didn't ring a bell to him. He says he is not aware of any hero who is called King of Conquerors. He just gave up on it and assumed it's a King he wasn't aware of/haven't read up about. Time will tell if he'll eventually find out about it or not.Archer - He never imagined Gilgamesh to be a "pretty boy" but he was fairly amused. He mentioned how he was very pleased with his characterization, as Gilgamesh was indeed known to be arrogant.Assassin He has no clue as of now, since nothing much has been revealed about Assassin that would reveal his identity. Based on the ED sequence though, his wild guess is that it's a reimagining of Saladin. Also, he has an interesting interpretation of his Noble Phantasm: Assassin in his former life was probably well known to be around multiple places at a time, thus creating a legend that he is not only one person, but an entire army.Berserker He is totally convinced that Berserker is William Marshall. His justifications make sense as well. His Noble Phantasm, being able to make anything he wields into a weapon directly matches William's proficiency on every weapon in the battlefield. Being a Knight who participated in several tournaments and always the victor, he was known to win against his enemy with any kind of weapon. Apparently he was also dubbed the Greatest Knight who ever lived, and Berserker's appearance being a knight in full armor resonates that. Another shallow theory is that he is Edward the Black Prince, just solely by the black armor he wore. His overall thoughts on the series so farWhile he really liked the premise and the concept of command seals, He is still finding it hard identify non-servant characters, especially the masters. He still hasn't remembered a single name, and harps on why everybody is named way too similar. Kiritsugu, Kotomine Kirei, Kayneth, Kariya. He says he will definitely watch it more, and give his thoughts again by the end of Episode 9. http://ift.tt/1pzvxsY
