[Spoilers] The Fantastic Post-apocalyptic World of Sora No Woto - an Introduction

Repost because the last post was removed for not having [Spoilers] in the title.Light spoilers ahead, you have been warned!Second warning, this is gonna be suuuuuper long.Recently I’ve watch a little underrated gem called Sora No Woto (English: Sound of the Sky), and I thought the world building was rather excellently done. It is really a shame that not many people have seen this show, do check it out if you can, as it is something really special. Not only is Sora No Woto set in an extremely interesting world, it also manages to tell a beautiful story featuring a cast of charming characters as well.I do understand that the slice of life, slow paced nature combine with the moe aesthetic of the show might not be for everyone. But have no worries, I was so inspired that I decided to write this super long post to introduce this amazingly world to you, /r/anime! And who knows, maybe after reading this you might just decide to check it out too! This is purely an introduction to the world of Sora No Woto. I do have another equally long essay with analysis of the plot and characters as well as my theory to explain certain things in the show - but that is for another time. For now, let us jump right in an explore the fantastic world building of the show! The World Has Already EndedAlthough it does not feel like it, Sora No Woto is very much set in a post-apocalyptic world. Civilization is well past its prime, and mankind is slowly marching toward its eventual demise. The remaining dwindling population are just the remnants - an insignificant fraction compared to the height of humanity of the former era. Much has been lost that could never gained again, from historical records to technologies to entire languages being forgotten. When the story began, the world has already ended, or is very close to it - the extinction of mankind is not a question of if, but when. How did it come to this? Events of the PastA great catastrophe that happened a long time ago is largely responsible for the current state of the world. Humanity fought a desperate war against an enemy of unknown nature referred to only as “them” and lost. The origin of these entities are shrouded in mystery, as is the reason behind the conflict. The only things we know for sure is that mankind fought to protect themselves and failed, which brought profound consequences upon the earth. This resulted in the utter decimation of human civilization as well as the total collapse of the ecosystem - from which the planet never fully recovered. What exactly happened after we lost? Where did the enemy go? How much time has passed since then? No one knew exactly, but humanity were not entirely wiped out. No records survived, and even if there were, it is likely that no one alive could read the language anymore. The last of mankind lingered on and endured into a new age, where the past with its magic-like technology is simply referred to as “the former era”. But this residual human civilization is just a pale shadow of what it used to be. Current State of the WorldThe destruction from the war left a permanent scar on the natural world. The ocean is now virtually sterilized - just giant body of water devoid of any wildlife. Entire continents turn into lifeless desert, rendering the land completely uninhabitable. This desolate wasteland - called “No Man’s Land” by the living human is slowly expanding, threatening to swallow whole whatever little livable area remaining. The landmass has changed so much that the world map is almost unrecognizable from the one we are familiar with. The universal understanding of the earth’s geography we take for granted today has vanished from the collective human knowledge - as such no people alive in this age has an idea of how the world look like on a global scale. As the planet is effectively uncharted at this point, a map of the world has to be redrawn, with much speculation and extreme inaccuracies.Among this harsh unforgiving world, there exists an area of lush land where the soil is fertile, the water is fresh and wildlife thrives. It is in these precious regions that humanity lived on, formed into nations and even managed to wage wars against one another over scarce resources. Politics & War in a Dying WorldIn this small pocket of civilization (which might possibly be located in what used to be Japan, China & Korea), humanity are divided into small, competing nations - each with its own system of government and cultural identity. The story mainly focuses on the conflict between the Republic of Helvetia (République d’Helvétia) and the Roman Empire (Romischen Reiches) - whose territories share the same landmass. Although it is worth noting that war is hardly exclusive to these two nations. While the name “Republic” might suggests otherwise, Helvetia is as much a monarchy as the Roman Empire is. Both countries are ruled by monarchs - the Archduke for Helvetia and the Emperor for Roma. Members of the royal family wield immense power and influence over society. Political marriage are common tools used for brokering peace between states.Helvetia and Roma fought a long, fruitless conflict for many years. When the war effort proved detrimental to both countries and their people, a temporary armistice was finally reached. It has been 6 months since then and the peace arrangement are still going nowhere with both sides unwilling to compromise on their conditions. Meanwhile, trouble are starting to brew at the borders - as even within the ranks of Helvetia’s military, there are those who would be happy to see the war continues until one side is completely eliminated.A point worth mentioning here is regarding the level of technological advancement in this world. Technology seems to have been largely stucked in the level of the 19th century with the only exception being firearms and military vehicles - probably thanks to the constant warfare. Culture & Religion - A Melting Pot of Various InfluencesAs continents slowly get engulfed by the vast desert, people of multiple different ethnicity migrating from all over the globe into this one tiny habitable corner of the world. Over time, culture evolved into what can only described as a melting pot of various heritages with overlapping eastern and western influences. Yet, there is still a clear distinction of cultural identity between different nations. Since the story is only told from the Republic of Helvetia’s side, we will mostly look at Helvetia’s culture here:The national language of Helvetia is French (while the Roman Empire use German), yet many of characters have Japanese name - which are given to them by the church at birth. The Japanese language itself is dead, no one could write or speak it anymore. Kanji text is referred to as ideograms - a long forgotten language from the previous era. The church seems to have some capacity of translating the symbolic meaning of kanji characters, although this is used exclusively for people’s names. This is why many people can write their names in kanji, but cannot read the language. Many sign their names with just pen and writing, but those with Japanese name can use a seal as signature. These seals are actually used in real life in modern day Japan. The food of Helvetia is a mixture of European and Asian dishes. Many people eat with chopstick, while others eat with forks & knives. Both flambéed steaks and tempura vegetables are part of the local cuisine.During local festivals, candy apples are sold together with fried onigiri, while Venetian carnivale masks are seen alongside traditional Japanese masks. The architecture and clothing are decidedly European (Spanish to be exact), but the currency is the Yen and Sen.The main religion of Helvetia - the Helvetian Orthodox Church is a fusion of Christianity and Shintoism. The church is built with a clear Catholic style, yet prominently display a Shinto Tomoe symbol. Instead of baptizing babies, the church gives them Kanji names. Similarity, the sister’s uniform borrow design aspects from the garments of both Christian nuns and Shinto miko. This colored glass window design at first looks just like an image of Madonna and Child, yet upon closer inspection, the Asian influence is undeniable. The shide - zigzag shaped paper often used in Shinto rituals can be seen at the church or all around town during festivals. The Helvetian Orthodox Church claims that there are an infinite number of gods (or 8 millions, depends on who you ask) and that they are merciful. In contrast, the Roman Empire seems to retain a more traditional form of monotheistic religion, their scripture teaches that there is only one God - who is unforgiving. The local festival to honor the dead is a combination of the French Fête des lumières and Japanese Bon Festival.Ema are small wooden plaques on which Shinto worshipers write their prayers or wishes - an old custom that was preserved until this day, except here everything is written in French. The Water Splashing Festival originated from Southeast Asia and China as part of the cleansing ritual to welcome the new year. Yet here it is incorporated into a local legend about the Fire Maidens who protected the city.Just like in real life, there are variations in the legends depends on who tell it. The Roman version of the Fire Maidens tale directly contradicts the Helvetian version.Next, let’s take a tour of Seize - the border city where the main story of Sora No Woto takes place. Seize - the Town of Lakes & GlassSeize is a city in the province of Trois, it is located in the northwest border of Helvetia, directly next to No Man’s Land. “Seize” and “trois” mean sixteen and three in French, respectively. So this is effectively City 16 and in Province 3 - the Helvetians aren't exactly creative in naming locations. The design of the town is directly inspired by the city of Cuenca and the town of Alarcón, both from Castilla La Mancha, Spain. The town used to be a flourishing tourist destination before the war. Many ruins of abandoned buildings dotted the area surrounding town, suggesting a much more prosperous past. The town is famous for its high quality materials and excellent craftsmanship at producing glassware. The glass workshop at Seize produced a significant amount of lenses for the military during the war.The actual fighting has never reached Seize, so the citizens mostly enjoy a quiet, peaceful life. Yet almost everyone has lost someone they know to the war.Besides glass product, another popular export of Seize is locally distilled Calvados apple brandy. The local merchant guild run an illegal bootleg alcohol operation with the help of the 1121st platoon. The due the remote location of Seize, everything is more relaxed here. From the law, to religion to military discipline. These are a few key locations in Seize:The Time Telling Fortress serving as the garrison for the local Helvetian army consist of 5 girls in the 1121st Platoon. As the name implied, one important function of the fortress other from protecting the city is to help the townspeople keep track of the time with the sound of trumpet from the clock tower. We will look at the Time Telling Fortress and the 1121s Platoon in greater details below. The church, which also double as an orphanage as well as the unofficial hospital for the town besides its main religious function as a place of worship. The church largely depend on the local people for donations to care for orphans and treating the sick and injured. Run by one sole young sister Yumina with the occasional help of priest from a larger parish in the neighbouring city of Treize. The Windmill - a shop that sells glassware and repairs music instruments among other things. Operated by a resourceful proprietress named Naomi. The glass factory lies just on the outskirt of town, where the majority of Seize famous glass products are manufactured. At the head of this factory is Carl - an artisan in glassmaking whose talent has earned him the title of maestro. The general store, which mainly specialize in food supplies. Owned by one humorous Mr Martin. The house of madame Jacott - an old lady who lives alone in the mountain outside of town, she comes into Seize everyday to sell the vegetables that she grown at home. The square, where events such as open market and festivals take place. The dam, which provide water for farming as well as flood control. The city gate. The skyline of Seize, as seen from the Time Telling Fortress. The narrow streets of Seize.Statue of a Fire Maiden - a figure from a local legend. Some of the few ruins and abandoned structures in the area surrounding the city.Strange rock formations known as the “Enchanted Forest” located outside of town.Several observation units - remnants from from the former era still lie in the wilderness around Seize. They are strangely still functional, even after many years without maintenance. The Time Telling Fortress - Home of the 1121st PlatoonThe Time Telling Fortress, also know as the Time Heralding Fortress or simply the Bastion is the official military garrison of Seize. Stationed in this army base is the 1121st Platoon - responsible for protecting the town and maintaining national border, among other tasks. Before exploring the fortress further, let’s briefly meet the members of the 1121st.The 1121st is a pink branch of the Helvetian army, meaning they are part of of the armored troops (tank). This is signified by the patch of pink of colour on their uniform collars. The traditional emblem of the platoon is a white owl on two crossed swords. The 1121st only has five members, exactly the minimum requirement for a tank crew. All of them are female, hence the nickname “bastion maiden” from the locals:Second Lieutenant Filicia Heideman - The officer in command of the 1121s and also the tank commander.Sergeant Major Rio Kazumiya - Second in command, senior bugler at the bastion and the communication officer.Corporal Noel Kannagi - The engineer, driver and resident genius of the platoon.Private Second Class Kureha Suminoya - The gunner and youngest of all the bastion maidens.Private Second Class Kanata Sorami - A brand new recruit, bugler in training and ammunition loader.Shuko - an owl which was adopted by the girls and is now the mascot of the platoon. If at this point you are thinking “these girls don’t look like they should be in charge of protecting an entire city”, you would be correct. The reality is with the armistice going on and the location of the town borders No Man’s Land, Seize is of little strategic importance to Helvetia. As such, military presence in the city is little more than a token decorative force. In fact, the 1121st - a tank platoon of the Helvetian army, doesn’t even have a working tank! The fortress itself is very old, possibly date back to the former era and many secrets lie within it. It is evidence that building used to be a school and a convent before finally it was finally taken over by the Helvetian army. The compound was originally designed to house a much larger number of people, but now many areas have fallen into disrepair, either due to the war or negligence.Key locations of the Time Telling Fortress:Blueprints of the the fortress: Ground floor + first floor + second & third floor and a bird eye's view. The bridge: the only way into the fortress. The bridge is not large enough for vehicles so walking is the only way into the bastion. The parking lot: technically lies outside of the fortress, on the city side of the bridge. This is where vehicles of the 1121st are parkedThe terrace: front entrance to the fortress, where the garrison flags are held. (From left to right: platoon flag, national flag, army flag)The outer courtyard: use as an assembly area, formerly a school yard. Part of the outer courtyard has been destroyed, leaving only a cliff. The inner courtyard: with a tub and water pump, this is where the platoon girls do things like washing the dishes and laundry.Old school buildings: now has fallen into ruins.Vegetable garden: at the back the compound, where the 1121st grow their vegetables for consumption as well as to share with the townspeople. The hangar: formerly the gym building for the school, now converted into a hangar to house the (non functioning) tank of the 1121st - the Takemikazuchi. Also double as a workshop for Noel to tinker with her inventions. The clock tower: sadly, no longer has a working clock. The tower is now used as both a watch tower and a high point from where the time-telling trumpet signal is played. The distillery: located in basement level, where the bastion maidens brew bootleg liquor. The dining room: breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here. This room also serves as an unofficial meeting room / common room because of its convenient location and large space. In this room also lies the only telephone in the entire city. The kitchen / pantry: right next to the dining room, where meals are made. The infirmary: where the sick and injured are treated. The classroom: where training and lessons take place.Commander’s office / tactics room: Where Filicia handle military paperworks and discuss important military matter with Rio - her second in command. The bathroom.Living quarter hallway.Filicia’s room.Rio’s room.Noel’s room.Kureha’s room.Kanata’s room. While it is true the 1121st is mostly there for decoration, but that doesn’t mean the girls don’t make themselves useful, far from it. Next, let’s take a look at the daily lives and duties of the bastion maidens. Daily Routine & Missions of the Bastion MaidensLife at the border is tough. Due to the remote location as well as the negligible importance of Seize, the 1121st is always short on ammunitions, medicines and various everyday need items. Monthly salary usually arrive late, and always in the form of military currency with extremely limited use. With supply constantly running low and struggling finance, the maidens are forced to get creative in order to boost their income. The main contact between the 1121st and army HQ is through a courier - major Klaus. He delivers military orders and personal correspondences, as well as army personnel to and from the bastion on a regular basis. However, whenever there is urgent documents that need to be rushed to HQ, the girls need to take the train to the next town to deliver them if Klaus is not there. Such is the inconvenience of a remote, middle of nowhere military base. However, the backwater isolation of the bastion is not without its benefit. Second Lieutenant Filicia is committed to making life as easy as possible for the girls under her command. This range from very lax military protocol to nice, lavish meals to taking over cleaning duty. In fact, she has a tendency to act more like a mother than a captain and will probably spoil the girls rotten given the chance. On the other hand, second in command Sergeant Major Rio - who is much more military minded is there to keep her in check, playing the role of the tough boss. So, what is it exactly that they do everyday when there’s no war to speak of? Let’s go through a typical day in the life of the 1121st Platoon to find out.5:00 - 5:30 Whoever is on trumpet duty (either Rio or Kanata) has to wake up early, wind the clock at the dining room. At 5:30, that same person then climb the clock tower to play the morning trumpet, signaling the sun rise.5:30 - 6:00 Whoever is on cooking duty makes breakfast for the whole platoon.6:00 - 6:30 Breakfast time6:30 - 7:00 Clean up after breakfast and a quick briefing for the day.7:00 - 12:00 Morning duty / training with a salute ceremony to the flags at 9:00. At 11:30, whoever is on cooking duty makes lunch for the whole platoon. At 12:00, whoever is on trumpet duty play midday trumpet, signaling noon time.12:00 - 13:00 Lunch time & noon break.13:00 - 18:00 Afternoon duty / training. At 17:00, whoever is on trumpet duty play afternoon trumpet, signaling school time is over.18:00 - 18:30 Debriefing for the day. Whoever is on trumpet duty play the evening trumpet, signaling the sunset.18:30 - 19:00 Whoever is on cooking duty makes dinner for the whole platoon.19:00 - 20:00 Dinner timeAfter 20:00 Free time.Duty and training rotate everyday based on a fixed schedule, and can include any of the following activities:Cleaning the garrisonDoing the laundryCookingPaperworksTending the vegetable gardenWeapon maintenanceGround combat drillTank combat drillGuard dutyTechnical lessonsPhysical trainingShopping for suppliesPersonal groomingFixing the tank (this job is pretty much limited to Noel)Mingling with locals, helping with festivals preparation and suchGhost huntingOperation bootleg liquorOccasionally, they will receive actual orders from Helvetia Army HQ or get a request for help from the citizens of Seize. When this happen, these missions take priority over everything else. Some examples include:Patrol dutyMaintenance check on former era observation equipmentDisaster reliefEnsuring the safety of the elderly over the winterRoutine telephone duty Weapons & Equipment of the 1121stWhile not exactly the most equipped troops in the Helvetian army, the 1121st has all (almost) all the tools necessary to perform their duties. For a squad of 5 people, they are decently well armed, with the following weapons available:One heavy machine gun (MG42 with drum magazine)Two light machine guns (MP38 or MP40)Four rifles (Karabiner 98k, with optional optic attachment)Five handguns (Mauser C96)For transport, they have the following vehicles:Two VW Type 82 Kübelwagen military utility roadstersOne Zündapp KS750 motorcycleAnd finally, the star of any tank platoon:One (sadly defunct) Vector Type Zero autonomous moving tank - a relic from the former era - the Takemikazuchi. More on this below. The 1121st wear the standard Helvetian army uniform, with the platoon emblem sewn on the left arm and a pink patch on their collar signifying their status as tank troops. These uniforms comes with a few variation for comfort and versatility:Standard uniform - used all year around.Winter uniform - includes a coat and scarf worn over the standard uniform to keep warm during the winter.Summer uniform - made of lighter materials and shorts is used instead of pants.Other military equipment are available to the bastion maidens, such as:Standard issue wristwatches. Time pieces are rare and probably expensive, which is why only the military has them. Hence the need for the trumpet sounds to help normal citizens keep track of the time of day.One trumpet and one bugle, belongs to Rio and Kanata respectively. The usage of brass instruments is restricted to the army only. Since radio hasn’t been rediscovered, communication on the battlefield solely relied upon trumpet signals. A system of code was invented so that the sound of these instruments can be used to convey precise complex messages such as ceasefire, commencing attack, pinpoint locations and much more. One telephone - possibility the only one in the entirely city. This phone is a directly hotline to the Helvetian army HQ in the capital. Only to be used in case of extreme emergencies, otherwise all communications with HQ still rely on good old fashion pen and paper documents.Compass and geographical maps of the surrounding area.Military binoculars.Standard issue backpacks, capable of carrying heavy loads.Standard issue first aid kit. The Takemikazuchi - a Relic from the Former EraUnlike the tanks with treads we are familiar with, all the tanks in Sora No Woto run on metal legs. There are two theory that explain this: First, they were probably designed this way to be better suited to the mountainous terrains of Helvetia. Second, they are modeled after the Vector Type Zero tanks of the legendary former era, all of which run on legs. The Takemikazuchi is a legacy from the former age, with no more than 10 models left in the entire world. It is a much more sophisticated machine compare to the conventional armors used by the Helvetian army, capable of a wide range of functions both in and outside of combat. The interior of the Takemikazuchi versus that of a standard Helvetian tank - both with a full crew. The Takemikazuchi with its advanced autonomous capability can be crewed with as little as two people. The Takemikazuchi is controlled with computer and projected HUDs, compare to the conventional tank, which is all manually controlled. The Takemikazuchi has 6 legs instead of 4 like a normal tank, she is able to move with much greater speed and elegance, even capable of climbing vertical surfaces as well as jumping great distances.State of the art lightweight armour made from an special alloy of the previous era, enabling the Takemikazuchi to withstand multiple direct hits from traditional tanks without sustaining any major damage. The tank is equipped with at least four laser sights for accurate targeting.Has an intercom system that can be used within members of the tank crew as well as to communicate with other tanks. Unfortunately the Takemikazuchi is one of the rare few tanks left that comes equipped with this system, so trumpet signals is still used.Has sensors that can measure temperature and weather outside.Possesses and external audio system that can be used to play music. Can be used as a power generator. The Takemikazuchi comes with the following armaments:Main gun - a recoilless railgun that is able to fire several different types of ammo including HE (high explosive) and AP (armor piercing) shellsChaff projectiles (10 rounds)Smoke grenades (10 rounds)Missile Pod 1 (10 missiles)Missile Pod 2 (10 missiles)Machine gun (400 rounds)Anchor wire which be fired and retrievedA versatile machine, the tank also has the follow modes built-in, which can be enabled or disabled via the control console. Although not much is known about what exactly each mode does, as we only caught brief glimpses of them on the HUDs.Normal Mode - for normal operationPractice Mode - for combat simulation and trainingStealth ModeSniper ModeTarget Pursuit ModeSetting ModeSound ModeSleep ModePresumably more more wonders of the previous era sleep within the Takemikazuchi, its full potential has yet to be completely discovered. And that's it! Here's an album of composite scenery porn from the show your enjoyment! http://ift.tt/1RVwa6X

Is The Order A Rabbit? / Gochiusa is set in an alternate reality where Japan won World War II.

DISCLAIMER: This is my entry for the writing contest. There will be spoilers, read this at your risk! Though given the nature of the Gochiusa as a moe SOL there isn't really much to spoil. At first glance, Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka? (or Gochiusa for short) might seems to be just another “cute girls doing cute things” slice of life. But I believe there is a darker secret to the show hidden beneath the fluffy surface. Is there more to this anime than meets the eye or am I just reading too much into this because I have nothing better to do?Probably the later, but that’s beside the point. In this essay, I seek to prove my completely sensible theory that Gochiusa is set in an alternate reality where Japan has won World War II, and is now ruling over Europe. After that, I will discuss the characters and how their stories fit into this scenario. All supporting evidences will be coming from the two seasons of the anime. Gochiusa is set in Europe - after Japanese occupation. The story in Gochiusa is quite straightforward. One day Cocoa arrives in a new town - where she will be living and working part time at the Rabbit House cafe. There she quickly make friends with a few other girls around town. The show follow the girls’ daily lives as they have fun and generally be adorable. Pretty standard moe SOL fare, nothing to write home about. What makes Gochiusa stand out the most is its unusual setting.Immediately upon watching episode 1, it is clear that Gochiusa is not set in Japan. So where it is exactly? In the anime, it is referred to as the “wood-framed town”, or simply “the town”. Based on the architecture, we can tell that this place is located in Europe. In fact, it is no secret that this town is based on Colmar - a real town located in the Northeast of France. (Note that while the town is directly inspired by Colmar, the bathhouse is actually from Budapest). So is Gochiusa set in Colmar, France? Maybe, maybe not. According the various signages around the town, the majority of the text seems to be a mixture of French, German, English and some Eastern European language. It is uncertain which country this is supposed to be, we can only be sure that it is located in Europe. Now that we have established that Gochiusa is set in an Europe, we can safely assume that the majority of the characters are not Japanese, but Europeans. We all know that eyes and hair color are meaningless in anime when it comes to identifying nationality, so let’s look at names. Consider the first name of the five main girls (Cocoa, Chino, Rize, Chiya and Syaro), only Chiya and Rize are actual Japanese names. Chiya also happens to be the girl whose heritage is the most apparent - I’m 99.53% confident that she is Japanese. The same cannot be said for the other girls. This bring up a question: If the characters are not Japanese and the town is not in Japan then why is everyone using Japanese? This is not a case of in this world the language barrier doesn’t exist. Otherwise, Cocoa and Chiya would not have to learning English.Japanese influence goes beyond the usage of written and spoken language. As we can see, the main currency is the Yen, not the Euro. Even the legislation system is using the Six Codes - which is from Japan. Even more puzzling, the town does in fact, have a name - which we can spot on Cocoa’s letters to her family. Ogikubo - Suginami does not exactly sounds European doesn’t it?What exactly is going on?The answer is simple: Japan has won the second world war, and much of Europe has been occupied and under imperial rule ever since. It makes sense that the empire would enforce Japanese law and Japanese currency in occupied territories. They renamed the town from whatever it was into the name of an area in Tokyo. A long enough time has passed that Japanese has become the main language for the common people - this land is now essentially annexed into Japan. What’s more, the war is most likely not yet over. Where are the men? They are all drafted into military service.Yes, you occasionally see other men in the town, but the number of actual male characters in Gochiusa can be counted on one hand. Is it easy to overlook the lack of male characters in a show like Gochiusa, after all this is a moe SOL. However, when you consider that there is a war going on, a much more sinister scenario arises. And there is definitely a war - seeing as both Chino’s and Rize’s fathers are ex-soldiers.What is this war? Who is fighting who and where? We do not know. What is clear is the lack of male presence in this town. Following along with our theory of Japanese occupation, the most logical explanation is that most of the men were conscripted into mandatory military service - so they are all presumably off fighting somewhere far away from home. This explains why in such a picturesque town you would expect to see a lot of tourists, yet the cafes our girls are working in seems to be empty all the time. Even on Christmas night, one of the rare occasion when the Rabbit House is actually full, the customers are almost entirely women. Also what about the lack of male students in high schools and middle schools? There are at least three different schools that the characters go to, yet we don’t really see any male students around. Maybe they all go to female only schools? Unlikely. But wait, what about Chino’s dad and Rize’s dad? They are men right? Remember that both of them are war veterans, and have seen their share of combat. They probably have already completed their terms of service and were released from military duty.It is worth noting that out of all five main girls, only Chino and Rize still have fathers. None of the other girls had to worry about a gift for father’s day besides these two. Chiya only has her grandmother and Syaro lives alone. Cocoa even helped in making the gift for Chino’s dad, but not for her own dad. When they were saying goodbye at the station, her sister Mocha said that mom is waiting for Cocoa at home, but there was no mention of their dad. The implication is clear: They no longer has a father.Let’s not forget Cocoa’s two older brothers. Very little is known about them and they only show up briefly in some flashback scene. At the end of season 2 we see her sister Mocha together with their mother at home, but the brothers are nowhere to be seen. Could it be that they are old enough to be serving in the army at this point?Next, let’s take a deeper look at each characters and how their backgrounds fit into this. Rize is daughter of a warlord, she is being trained to become an assassin. When we first met her, Rize mentioned that she has been trained in self-defense ever since she was small. While most of us dismiss this fact as just another quirk that makes Rize even cuter (it really does), isn’t it really weird when you think about it? Who train their little daughter in using firearms and CQC, drilling into her military discipline at such a young age? Rize tries to act like an average highschool student as much as she can, at times her displays an alarming level of ruthlessness. Not to mention, no normal teenage girl is such a complete gun nut or possess such incredible physical strength.Considering that they were both in the army together, Chino’s father and Rize’s father led utterly different lifestyle. The Kafu seems to live on modest mean, yet Rize’s family is really wealthy - living in a huge mansion complete with maids and bodyguards. We never really see police or any kind of crime (except those committed by rabbits) in this peaceful town, so why the heavy focus on security?Rize’s father is certainly not simply a soldier. While we do not know what he really does now, guessing that he is a underground warlord operating some kind of private military is probably not far from the truth. The man is ambitious, in training Rize to become some kind of super solider, he apparently has big plans for his daughter. Is he preparing her for the eventuality that the law will caught up to him, so that she can fend for herself if the need arises? Maybe he grooming Rize in case she has to take over his position in the organization? Or getting her ready for something even more sinister?Rize also has a little bit of a father complex. This goes beyond admiring her dad as a role model. Out of the five girls, Rize is the most mature and often act as the voice of reason for the group. Yet whenever her dad is involved, she becomes completely flustered. Like when she is too shy to give her dad his father’s day present or grow totally red face when he saw her in the maid uniform.Another troubling sign: Rize has a stuffed rabbit toy called Wild Geese that she likes cuddle in bed. Wild Geese wear a rifle on his back and has an eyepatch. Well guess who else also has an eyepatch? Rize seems to be rather fond of the name Wild Geese, as she gave the same name to the feral rabbit taking up residence in Syaro’s house. Syaro is a war orphan, and she has amnesia. We know that Syaro is a poor 15 years old girl living by herself. She works hard at multiple jobs to make a living and goes to a prestigious school thanks to earning a scholarship. What the show totally gloss over is the obvious fact that she is an orphan. Everyone else has at least some family members, but Syaro is alone. How could a 15 years old girl afford such a large house? The house might be run down but it is still in a prime street front location, not some shady back alley - seeing as Ama Usa An is right next to it. The answer is simple: she is not renting the place, because it has always been her home. She grew up there. How do we know this? In a flashback, we saw a young Syaro playing together with a young Chiya - this means two things. First, that they has always been friends and neighbors ever since they were little. Second, that Syaro must have had parents taking care of her back then. A 15 years old living alone is believable, but she could not have been on her own at such a young age. What’s worrying about Syaro is that she possibly has light amnesia. Chiya mentioned that they used to play blowgun together and that Syaro was very good at it. Yet she is completely baffled to find out she possess excellent blowgun skills. Syaro struggles to recall anything regarding the rivalry between Rabbit and Ama Usa An, going so far as to keep hitting herself trying to remember. Whatever events happened in her past was traumatic enough to create a mental block in her mind, making her forget certain events of the past.Judging by her dress and toy back when she was young, as well as her rather refined taste, Syaro was not always poor. Her natural grace and elegant manner might be a result of her upbringing. This is also why Syaro is able to fit in perfectly with the rich girls at school, where no one suspected that she is actually poor. Whoever her parents were, they are gone now - perhaps they had become victims of war. The fact that Syaro is all by herself now makes her an orphan.Remember when Chiya was worried that Syaro might have been involved with some questionable establishments? This proves that her financial situation was desperate enough that the the scenario of Syaro working for a cabaret (or something worse) is a very real concern. The girl is not exactly stable so it is a good thing that her nextdoor childhood friend Chiya is always looking out for her! Chiya is a foreigner, and the truth behind the rivalry between Ama Usa An & Rabbit House. While the nationality of all the girls remains mysterious, Chiya is definitely Japanese - and she is really proud of her heritage. Aside from her fascination for all things Japan, certain aspects of Chiya’s character tell us without a doubt that this girl is Japanese and not just a Japanophile.Chiya absolutely love manzai comedy, and she takes any chance she can to perform skits. The girl is committed to staying in character entirely, going so far as to gather up an entire basket of poisonous mushroom, just waiting for someone (the “straightman”) to point out her error (the “punchline”). Manzai humor itself is very Japanese, not something that the average Western person would enjoy.Yet when it comes to serious matter, Chiya has a tendency to not voice her feelings, we see this time and time and time again. When she actually has to express something difficult, she does it in the most roundabout way possible. When Chiya wants to convince Syaro to work with her, she left a package of sweets with a note stating her wish instead of just saying it directly. This passive-aggressiveness and non direct approach are very typical Japanese traits. We have other evidences indicating Chiya’s origin as well. When she first came to Rabbit House, it is revealed that Chiya has never seen a Western coffee menu before. While Chiya’s kimono is part of work, her grandmother always wear the kimono although she is never in the front of house. Plus, Ama Usa An is nothing like all the other buildings in town - the place looks like something that belongs in, well Japan. We can safely say that Chiya and her grandmother are foreign to this land. They came from Japan to open a tea house in this European town. This explains the supposedly rivalry between Ama Usa An and Rabbit House. How you ask? First we have consider how exactly are these two establishments competitors in any way? They offer completely different products: Rabbit House sells coffee and Western pastries while Ama Usa An sells Japanese sweets and tea. Which means they are not directly competing in terms of products.Next, it’s not like Ama Usa An is directly next door to Rabbit House. Chino has to walk quite a long distance to Ama Usa An in order to get the medicine for a sick Cocoa. In fact, it is about an hour trip back and forth. In this town, Rabbit House surely does not lack for competitions within the immediate vicinity before we even get anywhere near Ama Usa An. Which means they are not directly competing in terms of location. If they are selling different products and are not even nearby, then why did the old master considered Ama Usa An a rival to Rabbit House? As it turns out, the rivalry is only in his mind and Chiya’s grandmother never thought anything about it. This is our hint to the truth.Chino’s grandfather is old, probably old enough that he can remember a time before the Japanese occupied this town. He held a grudge against the Japanese for taking over his home, and for taking his son off to war, leaving him a with struggling coffee house and a little girl to take care of. Ama Usa An stands out like a thorn in his eye because it represents everything that went wrong in his life. And now this Japanese tea house wants a piece of his business as well? The old man is having none of that.Ultimately, the master is a good man. And we see that he actually adores Chiya just like with all the other girls. Unfortunately he still can’t stand Ama Usa An, though for a different reason entirely. Chino has a lonely childhood and the master’s last wish.Chino is a very polite, timid and reserved girl. Despite being rather mature and responsible for her age, she is quite shy around people, even with those close to her. This is a result of her growing up without much social interactions. After meeting young Cocoa, the master mentioned that Chino gets lonely when Tippy (the rabbit) is not around. This tells us that she really has no other friends beside the angora rabbit. She spent most of the time alone - therefore she does not know how to deal with people. Chino lacks the social skills to make friends, and ended up keeping distance to everyone except those she is truly comfortable with. This explains why Chino always keep Tippy around whenever possible, because the rabbit’s presence makes her feel at ease - although it seems like Cocoa is slowly taking over this role. While it was never mentioned in the anime, in the manga it is stated that her mom died when she was younger. As for her dad, he was away at war during most of her childhood. When young Chiya and Syaro was checking out Rabbit House’s menu - the old master was the only person there. And then there’s Aoyama Blue Mountain who knew the master when she used to frequent Rabbit House asking for his advice, yet she has never met Chino’s dad before. It means that this entirely time he was in the army and had only gotten back to manage the family business once grandpa has turned into Tippy. And it makes sense, as we’ve seen that Chino is rather adept at house chores - precisely because she is used to be by herself all the time. With a her grandfather at work managing Rabbit House, her mom passed away, her dad away at war and no friends other than Tippy, Chino must have had a lonely childhood. This stress of having to take care of both the family business and Chino is probably what lead the old master to complain to Cocoa that he would rather be a rabbit instead. We still don’t know whether he truly died and then his “soul” somehow get transferred into the body of Tippy or he simply ceased existing as a man and just become Tippy instead. Seeing as the rabbit was already the family pet even before the encounter with young Cocoa, I’m gonna go with the former theory: he died of old age but his soul lives on in Tippy.I imagine the master was full of regret before he passed away: his country taken away from him, his business struggling to stay afloat, his son is away in some war he wanted no part of. And most of all, he did not have the time to properly takes care of Chino. He told Cocoa that he wish to become a rabbit so he wouldn’t have to work but I think what he really wanted deep inside was to spend time with his granddaughter and see her smile. In the end, he got exactly what he wanted - now in the form of Tippy, he can make up to all the time he did not get to spend with Chino before, and he does not have to work anymore! As for Chino, she is slowly opening up and start making friends (thanks to Maya and Megu), plus she now gets an annoying older sister who fawn over her all the time!A curious detail regarding Chino: she also has a one eyed stuffed bunny similar to Rize’s. But in a flashback with her mom, we see the same rabbit had no eyepatch. So is this somehow connected to her mother? Does the eyepatch signify loss? And if so is Rize’s mom gone as well? Cocoa is an angel sent by a higher force, her job is to make everyone happy. It is easy to dismiss Cocoa as the annoying klutzy genki girl. But she actually has a very important role to fulfill - the reason why she came to this town in the first place. Before we talk about Cocoa, let’s take a look back at the other girls:Rize is raised by a dangerous warlord and being trained into a killing tool for her father’s own nefarious intention. Syaro is a war orphan with amnesia, struggling to make ends meet everyday. Chiya is coping to live a foreign land far away from her ancestral home, having to deal with hatred from the locals for the war crime committed by her people. Chino grew up lonely with no friends, socially awkward and insecure. As we and see above, most of the girls have rather unhappy background. They are all trying to move on from past trauma, to live a normal, peaceful life. This is the reason why Cocoa exist - according to my theory she must be an angel or some supernatural entity and she was sent to this town by some higher force to bring happiness to these girls.Although Cocoa being Cocoa, she most certainly is not aware of her own true nature. Or she might have forgotten. Either way, there are many signs pointing to the fact that Cocoa is not a normal girl. I’m sure you are tired of reading paragraphs at this point, so I present: bullet points! The most obvious display of her power is when she listened to the Rabbit House’s old master’s wish and granted him exactly what he want: to become a rabbit and spend time with his granddaughter aka Cocoa makes people’s wishes come true. When Cocoa first started working at Rabbit House, she can immediately detect Rize’s presence - Rize the super assassin who has been trained in stealth since her childhood! When finding the way to her new school, Cocoa displays her super dimensional walking power, constantly passing by Rize on her way to find her the new school within the span of 5 minutes, prompting Rize to question her own sanity.Cocoa constantly demonstrates supernatural skills, but she has no idea how to properly use her powers. When trying to do cafeomancy she was able to accurately predict three future events, although she did not know those events would be happening to herself. In another display of inhuman genius, she can instantly complete the jigsaw puzzles that takes Chino days to finish and then unconsciously solve a difficult wire puzzle without breaking a sweat. What about her amazing ability to make instantaneous calculations or to memorize prime numbers? During their study session at Chiya’s house, she can easily list every prime number up to the thousands before getting distracted by a picture album.Cocoa can create life! We see her making a snow rabbit shortly before getting sick. Over night it had spawned at least three other baby snow rabbits!During their camping trip in the mountain, Cocoa shares her power with Chino, helping her to fish with powerful fluffy magic. In front of Chino’s camera, Cocoa can instantly make a pose at such lightning speed that even Rize could not react in time.Cocoa is a being made of pure love. She famously stated that her policy is if she knows you for 3 seconds then you are her friend. Plus, she has proven time and time again that she can be instantly happy no matter what. Just her presence alone is enough to bring these girls together, adding a little bit of happiness into their unfortunate lives. This tells us that Cocoa’s main function is to bring joy and love to the people around her.Chino’s dad might be onto something here. http://ift.tt/22DvBqI

In Defense of the Moe SOL - Part 1

Ah, the Moe Slice of Life - never has there been a more polarizing topic that is guaranteed to spark much heated debates among anime fans. Many friendships have been destroyed over this controversial matter, brotherhoods have been torn apart - citing irreconcilable differences in opinions. Is Moe killing anime? Is Moe the best thing ever? As someone who has been on both side of the argument, this write-up is my attempt to analyse (1) what is moe, (2) why people hate moe, (3) what are the appeals of moe as well as (4) debunk some common misconceptions about the genre. In case the title did not make it clear, I’m squarely in the Pro-Moe camp, though this is a fairly recent development. A lot of people - like me, went from hating the genre to loving it, though I personally have never seen the reverse happen, kinda weird right? Well there is a reason for that (I think), which I will try to explain further below. Moving on - this is gonna be long one, sorry for the wall of text. First thing first, some ground rules for this discussion:English is not my first language, so sorry ahead for any confusion.I will try to be as objective as possible in my analysis, given my stand on the matter.Feel free to criticize me if you disagree. Better yet, let me know why!Be respectful of other’s opinion, this is the internet after all and internet points from strangers are important. What is Moe?Before we can discuss the prevalence of moe in anime, it is important that we understand the background of kawaisa (可愛さ) - or the Japanese culture of cute. As a cultural phenomenon - cuteness is increasingly accepted as part of the national identity, prominent in every aspect of Japanese popular culture from entertainment, clothing, food, toys, personal appearance to behavior and mannerisms. Kawaisa is deeply embedded in contemporary Japanese culture and is used in a vast array of situations and demographics where, in other cultures, it would be considered juvenile or just plain weird (public service warnings, office environments, commercial airlines, government publications — even military advertisements). Japan is probably the only country in the world where you have government appointed Cute Ambassadors (who are literally highschool girls by the way) to go around the world promoting Japanese pop culture. Many companies use cute mascots to present their products and services to the public from big business to corner markets and national government, ward and town offices. Look no further than the success of Hatsune Miku - originally a persona for the Vocaloid singing synthesizer application, who ended up becoming a massive franchise on her own, ironically much more popular than the software she is supposed to represent. Also did you know Windows 7, 8, 10 and Internet Explorer all have official anime character mascot? Microsoft sure knows the Japanese market well. Just like being sexy and attractive is considered desirable for Western women, this cuteness is considered a desirable trait for a Japanese woman. Women in their twenties or even thirties might use a high-pitched voice simply because it sounds cute, despite the rest of the world finding it very creepy that childishness is considered a sexy thing. If you find any of that very weird, you are not alone - even the Japanese cannot agree amongst themselves. Nobuyoshi Kurita, a sociology professor at Musashi University in Tokyo, has stated that "cute" is a "magic term" that encompasses everything that is acceptable and desirable in Japan. While Hiroto Murasawa, at professor at Osaka Shoin Women's University, calls cuteness "a mentality that breeds non-assertion ... Individuals who choose to stand out get beaten down." Most famously, Hayao Miyazaki - the man behind studio Ghibli himself finds cutesy voice acting in Anime "unbearable". "Especially the young women's voices," he said "It seems like they're all speaking with an 'Aren't-I-so-cute?' voice. That's unbearable. I always want to do something about that." (He also stated that modern anime suffers because industry staff is made up of "otaku," or people who obsessively love anime; and that using the iPad looks like masturbation - but I digress). As a side note, it is worth knowing that cute culture is not limited to the borders of Japan but is also popular into other Asian markets. Cute merchandise and products are especially common in other parts of East Asia, such as China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and Southeast Asian countries like the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Like it or not, cuteness is a huge part of Japanese / East Asian culture, and it is here to stay. Moe (萌え) is a slang word that refers to feelings of strong affection mainly towards characters, mostly in (but not limited to) anime, manga, and videogames. The concept itself is deeply rooted in the Japanese culture of cute, and while this may sounds like a joke, moe has literally become an economic force have contributed positively to the Japanese economy. (In 2004, the market for moe media such as printed media, video, and games was worth 88 billion yen; roughly one-third of the estimated 290 billion yen otaku market in Japan) And with that, we are ready to discuss moe in the context of anime. What makes a show Moe? And why it is not killing anime. The word "kawaii" in Japanese has a broader definition than the English word "cute". When applied to pop culture, "cute" will suffice; however "kawaii" refers primarily to the affection of a parent toward a child coupled with the protectiveness for the innocent and weak. Thus a pop cartoon character is considered "kawaii" because it exemplifies the innocence of a child and evokes general protective, caring instincts in the viewer. Other translations of "kawaii" can include "precious", "lovable", "adorable" or "innocent". Let’s make something very clear from the start: Moe and the idea of cuteness/childishness being a desirable trait, is not something that comes from otaku fandom but is very much a significant part of Japanese pop culture. In fact, I would argue that cute culture is so deeply embedded in Anime that is it very rare to find any shows without any at least some elements of moe in it. Think of any shows that is intended for a mature audience and it will most likely has some moe in it, whether in terms of character design or how certain characters act, probably a combination of both. Cowboy Bebop has it, Death Note has it, Black Lagoon has it, NGE has it and even Berserk has it, et cetera, et cetera. This is not to say that shows / manga without any moe does not exists, you are just gonna have a very hard time finding them, I for sure have not seen any. So when angry anime fans stated that they hate moe with a burning passion, and that moeshit is the cancer that is killing anime, most of the time they meant a very specific genre of Anime: the Moe Slice of Life (Moe SOL) - also known as Cute Girls Doing Cute Things (CGDCT) - more on this later. Why do people hate moe so much? This has to do with the difference between Western vs Eastern points of view. Western audience has always preferred dark, edgy psychological shows or show featuring a lot of actions. It probably did not help that when anime was first introduced into the US - these kind of shows were the most heavily represented. (Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, NGE, etc) - these companies understand the Western audience’s taste - which is why these shows were imported in the first place.Later after on when moe shows started to become more popular in the West, this lead to two false assumptions: First is that these 80s/90s dark action shows represent the average anime. The reality is these mature kind of shows have always been less popular in Japan, they are meant for the hardcore fans only and are in no way representative of anime viewing preference in Japan, and by extension East Asia. The second false assumption: that all these modern otaku pandering moeshit is destroying anime. Moe has always been a part of anime and it is not going anywhere. And this might come as shock to many, but otakus are not the only main audience for anime shows in Japan. The most popular shows in Japan have always been family oriented shows aimed toward children with a heavy dose of cute (The top 4 recently being ancient shows like Sazae-san, Doraemon, Crayon Shin-Chan, Chibi Maruko-Chan), some family friendly super robots shows (Gundam, Macross) and a bit of magical girl (Precure, Sailormoon). This is a bit outside the scope of our discussion but I would like to once again emphasize the top 4 most popular TV anime shows in Japan as stated above. Can you spot the common theme between them? This will be important for our discussion. While a bit biased, this old timer makes a lot of good points. While moe has always been a part of anime, I agree that moe in anime, and especially CGDCT Slice of Life have been gaining more and more popularity lately. Anime studios are after all, businesses, and they have to respond to market demand. Japanese companies are well aware of anime’s international success, but in most cases the domestic Japanese audience come first and foremost. If moe brings in profit then moe it is. No, this is not killing anime and I’m glad for it. On the contrary I think the industry is in a very good place and we have more choices than ever before. Moe is here to stay, but the same can be said for dark action heavy shows that Western fans love so much. Be we can explain what are the appeals for Moe SOLs and why this is actually a good thing for us anime fans, let’s briefly look at the queen of all Moe: K-On! Let’s talk about K-On!One cannot have a proper discussion about Moe SOLs without talking about K-On! - after all, saying that you love or hate this show on reddit is basically asking for downvotes - nobody wins. Coming out in 2009 by Kyoani, K-On! is not the first moe SOL in the market (two popular SOL examples: Lucky Star also by Kyoani and Hidamari Sketch by Shaft came out in 2007 before K-On), however there is no doubt that it is this show is what really propel the popularity of CGDCT in mainstream media. It is because of K-On!’s success that we are getting so many of these seemingly endless moe SOLs with the same formula in the recent years, much to the ire of many anime fans. Now I’m sure y’all know K-On! is very popular, but I don’t think r/anime is aware of how much of a big deal this show is in Japan when it came out:In August 2009, the first volume of K-On! was the top-selling anime television Blu-ray Disc in Japan, having surpassed the previous record holder Macross Frontier, which sold approximately 22,000 copies of its first volume. It was the second best-selling Blu-ray Disc in Japan, trailing only Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, with around 49,000 copies. However, in October 2009, the first volume of Bakemonogatari surpassed K-On!'s previous record, having sold 37,000 copies at that time. Later, with the release of K-On!! volume 3, total BD sales for the series have outsold Bakemonogatari.A quick look at sales data from Japan here and here firmly establish the K-On! as one of the best selling anime series of all time.In fact, by February 20, 2011 K-on! has become the first TV Anime Franchise to Sell 500,000+ BDs, surpassing the Monogatari series (at that time) to become one of the best selling anime in terms of BD sales.K-On! Houkago Tea Time I album is the first Anime Character CDs to top Oricon Weekly Chart which sold 67,000 copies to debut at #1 in July 2009.1 year later they broke the record again with the release of Houkago Tea Time II which sold 127,000 copies to debut at the top of Oricon's album chart for the October 25-31 week of 2010.K-On! Live Concert: Let's Go! which sold 22,000 copies, topping the Oricon BD Music Sales Chart in the week of June 28 to July 4, 2010.The singles "Cagayake! Girls" and "Don't Say 'Lazy'" were certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for 250,000 full-track ringtone digital music downloads. Additionally, "Utauyo! Miracle" were certified Gold by the RIAJ in August 2010 for 100,000 copies shipped. The second anime's opening theme "Go! Go! Maniac" and ending theme "Listen!!" debuted at No. 1 and No. 2 in their first week of release on the Oricon singles chart, selling over 83,000 and 76,000 copies, respectively. "Go! Go! Maniac" became the first anime image song to ever top the singles chart and the band also became the first female vocalists to occupy the top two spots on the singles chart in 26 years since Seiko Matsuda in 1983. The season's second ending and opening themes, "No, Thank You!" and "Utauyo! Miracle" respectively, sold 87,000 and 85,000 in their first week and ranked at No. 2 and No. 3 in the Oricon charts respectively. In 2009, the school where K-On! is based on is even designated as a tangible cultural asset and is now a popular destination for fans of the show. The show is even partly credited for record electric guitar sales in Japan in 2011. Why all this popularity? Surely it must due to obsessive otakus spending excessive amount of money on fictional anime girls they grow attached to no? Actually K-On is quite universally loved by both fans and critics alike. As evidence by the many awards the show has won:Tokyo Anime Award: Best anime in the TV Category for K-On! (Season 1) in 2010 and K-On!! (Season 2) in 2011. Best Voice Actor to Aki Tokisaki for her role as Yui Hirasawa in 2011.Animation Kobe: Theme Song Award for “Don’t Say Lazy” in 2009, TV Award for K-On!! (Season 2) in 2011 and Theatrical Film Award for K-On! The Movie in 2012Anime Grand Prix: Best Anime for K-On! in 2009. Best Anime Episode for ep 12, Season 1 in 2009 and ep 24, season 2 in 2010. Best Female Character for Yui Hirasawa in 2009 and 2010. Best Voice Actor to Aki Tokisaki for her role as Yui Hirasawa in 2009. Best Song Award for “Don’t Say Lazy” in 2009.Seiyu Awards: Best Musical Performance for the album Houkago Tea Time in 2010. Best Rookie Actress to Aki Tokisaki for her role as Yui Hirasawa in 2009. Best Actress in Leading role to Aki Tokisaki for her role as Yui Hirasawa in 2010. Best Rookie Actress to Satomi Satou for her role as Ritsu Tainaka in 2010.Like it or not, there is no doubt that K-On is both a commercial success and is critically acclaimed in Japan. These accolades put the show right up there with the best of anime comparable to the likes of NGE, Code Geass, FMA, Gundam to name a few, all of which have won similar awards. In next part, let’s take a look into K-On and analyse why do people like the show? How does a show about cute girls doing mostly nothing like K-On (and by extension, other Moe SOLs) appeal to the audience? While I’m a big fan of the show I’ll be the first to admit that it is not perfect, nor is it the best Moe SOLs to me (NNB is, sorry K-On!) but when you have a show with this much cultural impact, it is definitely worth a deeper look. Plus a personal tale of how I learn to grow up and embrace the guilty pleasure that is CGDCT anime. While my writing might make this sounds like a grand debate into the nature of moe, don’t be mistaken. The answer is actually quite simple. In fact, Yui says it best. See you in the next post! http://ift.tt/1Zyp1OL

Brewing Coffee [Gochuumon wa usagi desu ka?]

https://vid.me/5JHk http://ift.tt/1Zi9Cr1
