I personally think that both the English and Japanese cast do an excellent job and would recommend that you give both versions a try in order to figure out which one you like better. What is the policy on spoilers in this rewatch? The standard /r/anime rewatch thread spoiler rules apply. Spoilers for episodes after the episode currently being discussed should be tagged. Spoilers for the episode currently being discussed or any previously discussed episodes do not need to be tagged. Spoilers for anything that's not the FLCL anime should be tagged appropriately. What does FLCL mean? http://ift.tt/21Hm9QM

[Rewatch] Ping Pong the Animation Episode 2 Discussion

Episode 2, I decided to trim down the OP post a bit this time.EpisodeDate (MM/DD)Episode 1 The Wind Makes it Too Hard to Hear02/29Episode 2 Smile is a Robot03/01Episode 303/02Episode 403/03Episode 503/04Episode 603/05Episode 703/06Episode 803/07Episode 903/08Episode 1003/09Episode 1103/10Final Discussion Thread03/11Rewatch FAQ:Where can I watch Ping Pong?Ping Pong the Animation is available for legal streaming within the United States on YouTube, Funimation's website, and Hulu. There was contradictory information posted in the previous rewatch thread, but Ping Pong may be available for legal streaming in some European and Middle Eastern countries on Crunchyroll and is available in Australia and New Zealand on Anime Lab.Is there an English dub and is it any good?Ping Pong does have an official English dub. Information concerning how to format spoilers is available in the /r/anime sidebar under the "Spoilers" heading.Does /r/anime have shit taste because Kong Wenge lost in the first round of the Best Guy contest this year?Yes. Coach not even making it to the elimination rounds was also a travesty.Episode 2 Discussion PromptAlthough Episode 2 does briefly introduce another important character, Kazama, the focus of this episode is squarely upon Smile and Koizumi (Coach). Throughout this episode Coach attempts to force Smile, who seems to only want to be left alone, into actually trying his hardest to win. Coach ultimately accomplishes this in the final segment by challenging and berating Smile until he is forced into robot mode. We are presented with a strong contrast between their motivations and attitudes towards competition in general. What are your thoughts on the motivations and outlooks espoused by these two characters? http://ift.tt/1L40Ma1

[Rewatch] Ping Pong the Animation Episode 1 Discussion Thread

Information concerning how to format spoilers is available in the /r/anime sidebar under the "Spoilers" heading. How can I help contribute to this rewatch (beyond standard commenting)?I'm currently looking for information concerning where Ping Pong is available for legal streaming outside of the United States, a guide to the various rackets and styles mentioned in the show, and general feedback concerning the content of the OP post. Responses addressing any of these three issues would be greatly appreciated at this time.Does /r/anime have shit taste because Kong Wenge lost in the first round of the Best Guy contest this year?Yes.Episode 1 Discussion Prompt (for those of you who would rather respond to specific questions)Episode 1 is all about character introductions as it introduces us to three of our four main characters, Smile, Peco, and Kong. Each of these three are also introduced in a different setting. Smile is standing next to a conversation of first years at ping pong practice, but not actively participating, Peco is skipping practice in order to play games for money, and Kong is seen filing his fingernails while lamenting his fate to be stuck in Japan as his plane lands. For first time viewers, what is your first impression of these three characters? For veteran viewers, how effective is the first episode in quickly giving the viewer a sense of each character's personality? For filthy elitists, how does the shot composition and camera movement during each of the characters' introductions inform the viewer about that character? Also what is your favorite episode of Legend of the Galactic Heroes?Assorted Thoughts on this EpisodeThe OP animation for the show wasn't completed in time for this episode, so if you're watching the broadcast version of the show, the OP will feature clips from this episode itself. If you're watching the DVD/blu-ray release version, then the standard OP animation will be present.People shit on this show's visuals a lot, but I think the visual presentation is pretty damn good regardless of opinions concerning how the characters actually are drawn. The consistent use of split screens and multiple frames in order to convey action or reaction helps make otherwise mundane scenes more intriguing. We sure spend a lot of time listening to ping pong balls getting hit back and forth in this episode, don't we? At the risk of sounding unbearably pretentious, I like that choice. It gives the episode a nice sense of rhythm. The conversation between Smile and Peco concerning how're they're going to sneak into the other school in order to spy on Kong is a nice little scene that demonstrates the differences between the two characters. Smile just walks in the front gate because doing anything else would be frustrating and unnecessary. Peco of course has some more elaborate plan that we never get detailed in mind because that's the thing you're supposed to do in these situations, right?I'm sorry about the delay in getting this episode thread up. http://ift.tt/1Uv86xt

Say it three times when you're in a pinch: Ping Pong rewatch starts on the 29th, Ping Pong rewatch starts on the 29th, Ping Pong rewatch starts on the 29th!

A little over a month ago I created a thread about some potential rewatchs and it seemed like people were generally enthusiastic about the idea of a Ping Pong rewatch around March. I went ahead and messaged the mods about it and got the rewatch added to the rewatch wiki in the sidebar. As this was all over a month ago, I figured that a lot of people have probably forgotten by now, so I'm just posting this as a reminder that the /r/anime rewatch of Ping Pong the Animation starts in exactly one week on February 29th.The current plan is to watch one episode per day with a final discussion thread being created the day after the episode 11 discussion thread. Threads relating to the rewatch will generally be posted around 7:00 p.m. EST. As /r/anime rewatchs are also a popular way for first time viewers to watch the show, I would ask that all those participating mark anything that happens in an episode after the episode currently being discussed as a spoiler. If you're on the fence about watching Ping Pong, then the rewatch thread located here gives a fairly decent overview of the show's strengths. I personally would recommend the show to anyone who enjoys character dramas as the cast of ping pong is generally likable and well developed across the board. All of the main characters get pretty satisfying character arcs and even a lot of the secondary cast get fleshed out well.I know /r/anime has been suffering from a bit of rewatch fatigue recently, but I'm fairly optimistic that this rewatch will be a success. Ping Pong came out two years ago, so I figure enough time has passed for those who watched it while it was airing to be beginning to hanker for a rewatch. Additionally, I know that a lot of people passed on this show initially due to the art style. I'm hoping that this rewatch will convince a decent number of new viewers to check the show out. Also /r/anime needs to learn why Kong losing in round 1 of the best guy contest is not okay. http://ift.tt/21muXwW
