[WT!] Mysterious Girlfriend X

Wew. My first WT! I hope I don’t screw up too bad.MAL Link: Mysterious Girlfriend XCrunchyroll Stream: Mysterious Girlfriend XThroughout all the different genres in anime, there seems to be one that's more prominent than most others: The Romance genre. Romance anime have a tendency to follow a lot of the same general themes and story tropes: Boy runs into girl, boy befriends/gets stuck with girl in some way or another, and over time they develop a romantic relationship. Of course, most shows aren't that bare bones, but romance anime still tend to follow that exact setup. Mysterious Girlfriend X isn’t entirely unique in that respect, but the way it approaches this kind of story is completely different from any other romance show. And yeah, it’s pretty weird. Maybe there’s a chance that you’ve heard of this show before, and like me, ignored it at first because it sounded so weird. Well, I’m here to tell you why you should still watch it regardless of that. But before I begin there, let me address what makes this show weird. It’s a show all about two teenagers swallowing each other’s droolYes, the entire show is built around the two main characters, Mikoto Urabe and Akira Tsubaki, sharing drool. You’d be justified in being immediately turned off from watching this show after hearing that. I know I was at first. But hear me out anyways. You’ll get used to it very quickly. Probably after episode 2. And once you get used to it, the show gets much better. So with that out of the way, let’s get into what makes the show good.Mysterious Girlfriend X, as mentioned before, is the story of Akira Tsubaki, and the mysterious transfer student, Urabe Mikoto. Urabe has many different quirks about her: Her hair is always covering her eyes, she falls asleep during lunch, she carries around a pair of scissors in her panties to lash out at people with, you know, normal stuff. But then late one day, when going to pick up his bag after class, he finds Urabe asleep in the room… with a huge puddle of drool on the desk.Doing what any normal person would do in that situation, he decides to… taste… her drool… yeah. Not long after that, Tsubaki is bedridden in his home, sick with a terrible cold. That’s when Urabe arrives to tell him that because he tasted her drool, he’s addicted and is going through withdrawal. So now he needs to see her everyday to get his daily dose of drool. And so begins the strange journey that is Mysterious Girlfriend X!So, yeah. The drool thing is weird at first. It's gonna be pretty off-putting for the first couple of episodes. But once you get past that, it becomes normal. And you may even end up liking it!The sharing of drool between Tsubaki and Urabe creates a very close bond between them. By drinking each other's drool, they can read each other's thoughts, feel each other's feelings, even get the same physical injuries as the other person. They go through all the same obstacles as normal relationships (first kisses, first dates, awkward sexual advances, etc.), but this weird saliva bond between them allows them to approach each of those situations in a different and unique way. And also, it's really cute. Like times where Urabe swallows Tsubaki's drool and gets embarrassed from his dirty thoughts about her. So the cuteness of the whole thing really adds to it. The basic setup of the show isn't all that different, but the way the two characters communicate is and it makes for a very cute and interesting watch in the end.And the music isn't something to ignore either. In my opinion, the OP and ED aren't really worth writing home about, but the background music is very unique, giving off a weird carnival vibe that sets an interesting mood for the show.I can't say Mysterious Girlfriend X is a masterpiece or anything like that, but it's not as bad as people tend to make it seem. It's a short and cute romance story, that doesn't have a very original story concept, but the way it approaches that concept is different from any other romance show out there. Thanks for reading, and I hope I've convinced you to check it out! I'd also like some feedback as well, if there's ever a time when I write another WT. Thanks! http://ift.tt/1nUG4yN
